The stories that unite us.

From north to south, east to west, and everywhere in between – this map represents a visual anthology of where we live, who we truly are, and how we are connected. Use this map to take a virtual trip across the LGBTQ+ world, and meet the inspiring individuals who have contributed their stories. Zoom into a specific location. Click on any Pride Flag to read someone’s story. Add your own story to the map.

Be heard. Be represented. Be united with your global community.

More so now than ever before, we need our stories. Across the world gay and transgendered rights are at the forefront of social and political debate. Though gay marriage has been recently legalized in many Western nations, and key victories have been won in protecting the rights of transgendered people, we have also seen that these hard-fought rights can be overturned by persistent opposition or a turnover in leadership. In countless other nation-states worldwide, LGBTQ+ people continue to live in fear of criminalization, ostracization, and violence, simply for living their authentic selves.

Living Without Disguises knows that telling our stories isn’t single-handedly going to repair the reality for LGBTQ+ people across the world. But it is a start. It is a means to connect us – so that those members of our community living in isolation and fear can see that they are not alone. So that the courageous activists at the frontlines of LGBTQ+ rights in ultraconservative cultures can connect to their peers. So that we can all see that despite our diversity, we share a common pursuit.

  • What does it mean to “live an authentic life”?
  • What was the defining moment that enabled you to step into your own authentic self?
  • What happened when you decided to shed your disguises and step into the light?
  • What obstacles have you faced while becoming your true you?
  • How have you embodied transformation?
  • What happened when you embraced yourself as enough?

Are you inspired to answer any of these questions? Do you have a story you are willing to share?

We are looking for proud, courageous individuals to contribute their story to the project – in their own words, in their own voice. Submit your story – in written form (up to 1500 words) and don’t forget to include a photo. – in video form no longer than 5 minutes. – or we can arrange to do an interview.
